Hyunjoo Oh
Hyunjoo Oh is a seasoned piano educator with over 35 years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels. Her teaching career is distinguished by a deep commitment to technical excellence, expressive musicianship, and student success.
She began her piano studies at the age of five and earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, where she was a scholarship recipient. During her undergraduate studies, she performed in numerous solo and two-piano recitals, and regularly served as an accompanist for vocal and string performers. Simultaneously, she taught aspiring young pianists at a leading music institute in Seoul. Many of her students gained admission to top music programs at prestigious universities, establishing her early reputation as a highly effective and inspirational teacher.
Driven by a passion for piano pedagogy, Ms. Oh pursued graduate studies in Piano Performance at Eastern Michigan University, where she served as a choir pianist and was awarded a graduate assistantship in recognition of her outstanding musicianship. She continued to refine her teaching and accompanying skills, working with students who achieved top ratings at the Michigan Music Teachers Association (MMTA) Music Festival.
In the United States, Ms. Oh has maintained a vibrant teaching studio in Michigan and New York, where her students have consistently earned the highest marks – including A+ ratings – on NYSSMA and other adjudicated music exams. Her teaching blends rigorous technique with a nurturing approach, helping students not only master their instrument but also develop patience, focus, and self-expression.
In addition to her work as a private instructor, Ms. Oh has been an accomplished church pianist for more than three decades, faithfully serving congregations in Seoul, Metro Detroit, and New York. She has also contributed as an accompanist for the Christian Broadcasting System of New York Choir.
Inspired by the works of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky, and influenced by pianists such as Dong-Hyek Lim, Yunchan Lim, and Vladimir Horowitz, Ms. Oh instills in her students a deep appreciation for musical artistry. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes not only technical proficiency but also the emotional and intellectual growth that music uniquely fosters. Through piano, she seeks to cultivate confidence, resilience, and a lifelong passion of learning in every student she teaches.
